About Us

 

Under the Computer Hood Users Group (UCHUG) is a non profit Users Group.  We are also members of the Association of Personal Computer User Groups (APCUG) (http://www.apcug.org).  UCHUG membership consists of first time computer users through Computer Consultants.  This diverse audience allows users of all experience levels to feel comfortable with exchanging ideas and obtaining help for problem resolution.

 

Woodbury Hall at Wesley Palms

The group meets to discuss hardware and software problems, answer questions and attend demonstrations on the first Wednesday of each month at Woodbury Hall at the Wesley Palms, 2404 Loring Street, San Diego, at 7:00 until 9:00 p.m.

 

Meetings may be attended free of charge by anyone interested in computers. For membership information, please contact the membership chairman, Bill Palmer, at UCHUG.Membership @ cox.net.  Members receive a copy of the group's monthly publication, Drive Light.

 

Directions - Take Interstate 5 to Garnet Avenue and go West.  Go .6 mile and turn right onto Soledad Mountain Road (heading North).  Go .2 mile and turn right on Loring Street to Wesley Palms, 2404 Loring Street, San Diego.

 

Building Entrance - Enter the main building to the left of center, go down the hall past the reception desk and to the right to Woodbury Hall.

 

Note: Limited parking is available in the main lot by the flag pole. Additional parking may be found on Wesley Drive in front of the complex, or on Loring Street in front of the complex entrance. As Wesley Drive is a narrow road that encircles the Wesley Palms complex, please park only on the inner side of Wesley Drive. Please carpool to the meeting if possible.

Membership Info

 

You are invited to attend the meetings at no cost.  If you should decide to become a member the dues are $15.00 per year.  Membership entitles you access to the monthly newsletter “Drive Light” 30 days in advance to being posted on the site for the general public, a free email address and members only raffle tickets for prizes at our annual Christmas party and raffle.

September 1st - Resizing Photos, Locating Your Stuff  - Summary: Find out how easy it can be to resize batches of photos to make them small enough to email or use on a web page. See how a Zoombak GPS locator can help you keep track of cars, children, pets or other items that matter to you. We will also provide a five minute trick / tip on Word character helps.

 

October 6th - TBD - possible presentation on Identity Theft - learn what the bad guys are trying these days to get your personal information and how to safeguard it.

 

 

 

 

Highlights from Previous Meetings

 

08-04-10 - The UCHUG meeting was hosted by Microsoft at their new store in Fashion Valley.  A Microsoft software and hardware technician gave a presentation on some of the Microsoft software and upcoming hardware offerings for the Xbox.  After the presentation a tour of the store was conducted.

 

07-07-10 - At this evenings meeting there was an open discussion of computer hardware and software problems.  There was also a recap of this years Southwest Computer Conference.

 

06-02-10 - UCHUG hosted their annual summer picnic at Crown Point on Mission Bay.  Pizza, drinks and plates were provided by the club.  Members also brought other picnic related food items.  The pizza was excellent and the conversation was lively.

 

05-05-10 - Learn the basics of digital photography (everything you were afraid to ask). See how to take those point and shoot photos and crop them and prepare them for printing. Also see how easy it is to share your photos or other files too large to email on a free drop.io file drop site. We will also have a discussion on the latest high-tech techniques and tools your dentist may be using.

 

04-07-10 - Simple Video Clip Editing, Introduction to Facebook, Graphing with Excel .  See a demonstration of vReveal and Muveereveal, two very simple programs to clean, edit and create videos.  These can be used by those with little more experience than taking a video clip with a digital camera.   Get an introduction to Facebook, the popular social networking site.  Creating a graph in Excel will also be demonstrated.

 

03-03-10 - Using Online Resources -  Members discussed and demonstrated how your computer can get you answers and show you how. From how-to-do-it videos on You Tube to a computer that seems to have all the answers we saw how to get the information and solutions you need. Also demonstrated was how to "rent" auto service manuals online, and find the best sites for explaining how stuff works.

 

02-03-10 - A discussion and demo was conducted on the technicalities for  “Text to Voice, and Getting Things Done With Your Handheld”.  Demonstrated was how your computer can convert text to spoken word audio. From convenience with ebooks to help for the disabled, this is more than just for bedtime stories. We also discussed some principles from a whole-life-organizing system and how a handheld can turn you into a productivity machine and can help turn your disorganized to-do's into an efficient way to get things done.

 

01-06-10 - UCHUG main presentation was “Of Browsers, Add-ons, Extensions, Accelerators, And Plugins”. Discussion included how these additions to your browser can add functionality and improve your normal web browsing. There was also a demonstration of GoToMyPC which allows secure access to your computer from anywhere.

 

12-02-09 – The December 2nd meeting was our Holiday party and auction. Members brought in their no longer needed Software and Hardware for the Auction and a favorite finger food or dish for the Pot Luck. The Group provided utensils, plates and soft drinks plus gift cards to Fry’s and local restaurants.

 

11-4-09 - The main program was a discussion of the upcoming USB 3.0 standard and a roundtable discussion of online shopping sources and issues.  This was followed by a random access question and answer period.

 

10-7-09 - Elections of the Board of Directors for the UCHUG Corporation for 2010 was conducted.   Elections were followed by a presentation from Lapworks on notebook computer cooling, ergonomics and product information on lap desks and desk stands for notebook computers. A Random Access computer question and answer session followed the presentation.

 

9-2-09 - UCHUG held a Webinar (on line seminar) on Acronis True Imaging disk imaging and backup software.  The nominees for our Board of Directors election to be held in October were also presented.

 

8-5-09 - UCHUG held a discussion and demo of using Skype to conduct a Webinar seminar for conducting on line seminars or other presentations.  Features of the Amazon Kindle electronic book were also demonstrated.

 

8-15-09 - UCHUG members attended a meeting hosted by the Senior Users Group for a presentation by Microsoft guest speakers.  Future Microsoft application and OS offerings were discussed.

7-1-09 - UCHUG held a round table discussion and show and tell of   search capabilities and its many other features.
